Liliha Chelle D. Baleña’s story of a young radio technician who helped the country fight the Japanese won first prize in the WWII True Stories contest among high school students, a joint project of the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) and the Philippine Daily Inquirer to mark the anniversary of Araw ng Kagitingan or the Fall of Bataan on April 9.
Baleña is a third year student of the University of the Philippines Visayas High School in Miag-ao, Iloilo. She was coached by Professor Dominique J. Maquiran. She will get a laptop and printer and a savings account with an initial deposit of P10, 000 from the PVB.
Second was the story of Gila Marie Jardinico about her grandmother’s family that “adopted” two American soldiers and helped them survive the war.
Jardinico is a first year high school student of the Palawan State University, Tiniguiban, Puerto Princesa City. She was coached by John Glenn S. Guanzon. She will get a desktop computer and a PVB savings account with an initial deposit of P7,000.
The third prize went to Desiree N. Sokoken for her story of a man who, armed only with a bolo, led his intrepid team in conducting occasional ambushes of Japanese soldiers.
Sokoken, an Ifugao who was earlier featured in this section for her essay that was a finalist in the Ramon Magsaysay Essay Writing Contest, is a fourth year student of the Mountain Province General Comprehensive High School in Bontok, Mountain Province. She was coached by Glynnis K. Ngeteg. She will get a digital camera and a PVB savings account with an initial deposit of P5,000.
