Three World War II historical markers in Baguio City have been refurbished through funds raised from the inaugural Victory Day Golf Cup, demonstrating how a sporting event honoring Filipino veterans has directly contributed to preserving the city's wartime heritage. Located along Kennon Road, Naguilian Road, and Marcos Highway, the restored markers now stand as renewed reminders of the sacrifices and heroism that helped secure the country's freedom during the Second World War.
Veterans Bank, in partnership with the Baguio City Government, highlighted the completed restoration project during the 2nd Victory Day Golf Cup held at the historic Camp John Hay Golf Club held last October 2, 2026. Originally scheduled for the 86th Victory Day on September 3, 2026, the golfing event was moved due to the inclement weather.
The restoration of the three markers fulfills one of the key objectives of the Victory Day Golf Cup: transforming remembrance into meaningful heritage preservation. By restoring these important historical landmarks, organizers aim to ensure that future generations continue to learn about the events, sacrifices, and individuals that shaped the nation's history during World War II.
The tournament commemorates the historic surrender of Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita in Baguio City on September 3, 1945, marking the end of World War II in the Philippines. Beyond commemorating this milestone, the event has evolved into a platform for preserving and promoting wartime history through tangible projects that benefit the community.
Building on the success of the marker refurbishment initiative, proceeds from this year's tournament will support the more restoration and maintenance efforts of World War II historical sites and markers in Baguio City and Benguet Province.
The success of the 2nd Victory Day Golf Cup was made possible through the support of its partners, sponsors, and players, whose contributions continue to help preserve the historical legacy of Baguio City and honor the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom.
